Neighbors Light provides short-term, structured housing for adults who are medically stable and ready to move forward, but who need a safe place to stabilize, recover, or prepare for employment. We are not an emergency shelter, not long-term permanent housing, and not a walk-in provider. We serve as a structured next step for referred individuals ready for more intensive support.
Neighbors Light operates on a referral-only basis through trusted community partners. Referrals allow us to assess fit, safety, and readiness before placement, which protects participants and the broader system. Referral-only does not determine who deserves help. It determines which setting is most appropriate at a given time. To learn more about the partner referral process, visit our detailed referral guidelines.
Referrals come from hospitals, shelters, case managers, and partner organizations. Each referral is carefully reviewed to make sure Neighbors Light is the right fit for that person. If you or someone you know might benefit from Neighbors Light, talk to your case manager, hospital social worker, or shelter staff about submitting a referral.
For individuals discharged from hospitals who are medically stable but need structured housing while connected to external medical care. These stays typically last a few weeks and focus on recovery and stability.
Neighbors Light does not provide medical care. Participants must be able to manage daily living activities independently and remain connected to external medical providers as needed.
For people preparing to return to work. These stays focus on job readiness, skills training, and employment planning. We expect participants to actively engage in job preparation and work toward employment.
Neighbors Light is not long-term housing. Stays are typically a few weeks to a few months, depending on the program and individual goals. The focus is always on helping people move forward, toward permanent housing, employment, or other next steps.
Neighbors Light emphasizes participation, structure, and shared responsibility as tools for stability, not as conditions of worth. Expectations are clearly communicated at intake, reviewed with referral partners, and enforced consistently. Participants work with our staff to create an individual plan with clear goals. We expect people to:
